Fuel economy important to car buyers, Consumer Reports survey finds

A survey by Consumer Reports magazine finds that fuel economy is most important to car buyers.

Nearly 40 percent of those surveyed ranked gas mileage as the No. 1 buying factor. That was followed by quality (17 percent), safety (16 percent) and value (14 percent.) Only 6 percent of the 2,009 adults surveyed ranked performance as the most important factor.

“These results make it clear that high fuel prices are continuing to impact driver behavior and influencing future purchase considerations,” said Jeff Bartlett, the magazine's deputy auto editor.

Nearly two-thirds of vehicle owners surveyed said they expect their next vehicle to get better gas mileage than their current daily driver; 90 percent of those folks said their response was related to high gasoline costs.

Alternative-fueled vehicles are gaining popularity, with 73 percent of those surveyed saying they would consider hybrid, electric, diesel or flex-fuel (uses E85 ethanol) options.

With gas prices high already and on the rise, gas mileage is something very important to keep in mind when buying a car. Also manufactures are always fighting to get the a higher MPG rating than the competition. So finding the most fuel efficient vehicle that still has all the features and options you originally wanted will make you say... take my money!

I have a weekend roadster and it gets 250kms per tank which doesnt exactly scream efficiency. Slowly with the gas prices rising Im realizing how expensive it is. Eventhough its a weekend car 250kms just kills me. I cant wait till they find a way to make fuel efficient cars with lots of power.
