Where to find info on the Lambda enigne

Does anyone kknow where you can find white papers or other details about the Lambda V6? Trying to get a handle on the engineering and manufacturing of the engine.

Lambada - I like that ; -). Yeah the Lambda is the V6 (3.3 and 3.8L) in the Sonata and Azera. I may try my contacts in Hyundai PR. Was hoping for some independent review.

What's odd is that I can usually wander out to a manufacturer's media site and grab their powertrain info (white papers, etc). But Hyundai has nothing in their press kits (the latest I have is the '06). It's just odd that they aren't talking up the technology. I have been seeing info on suppliers and know that Metaldyne builds sintered powdered metal con rods for the Alabama engine plant (Lambda) and Teksid, a Fiat subsidiary, casts the heads. The powdered metal will be the tech for both Korean and American built Lambda engines - but the heads from the Korean built engine probably come from another source than Teksid.

Here's a snippit - forged powdered metal con rods:
From 'Forging' Sept/Oct 2005 issue:
"The powder metal connecting rods are forged and machined at Metaldyne's Sintered Products facility in North Vernon, IN. And, Metaldyne North Vernon will begin Phase Two of production in November to ship connecting rods directly to South Korea for the 3.3-liter and 3.8-liter Lambda engines that will be produced at Hyundai's Asan plant."

Asan is the Azera/Granduer TG assembly plant.

Finding some other odds and ends out - the Sonata and Azera use throttle by wire and hydraulic engine mounts. Pretty much state of the art.

Here's a bit more (but nothing on casting techniques for the block - sleaves or the other odds and ends that are good indicators of refinement):

From http://452-engines.blogspot.com/
" Hyundai Lambda engine
The Hyundai Lambda engine family is the company's modern all-aluminum V6. It is manufactured at Hyundai's HMMA plant in Montgomery, Alabama.

G6DB

The 3.3 L G6DB version was introduced with the 2006 Sonata. It produces 247 hp (175 kW) at 6000 rpm and 238 ft·lb (306 N·m) at 3500 rpm.

The G6DB has an aluminum block and heads, variable valve timing on the intake side, and 4 valves per cylinder. Bore is 92.0 mm (3.6 in) and stroke is 83.8 mm (3.3 in) for a total displacement of 3342 cc.

Applications:

* 2006 Hyundai Sonata

3.8

The 3.8 L (3778 cc) version produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 257 ft·lb (348 Nm). It has a 96.0 mm bore and 87.0 mm stroke.

Applications:

* 2006 Hyundai Azera
* 2007 Hyundai Entourage
* 2006 Kia Sedona
* 2007 Kia Sorento"

Some more nuggets - out of Hyundai Australia PR office:
"Grandeur’s engine is a 3.8 litre variant of the all-new, all-alloy, ‘Lambda’ series 60-degree V6 first seen as a 3.3 in Sonata. It has dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) per bank, four valves per cylinder with CVVT (continuously variable valve timing) on the intake valves and pent-roof {typical of four valve engines} combustion chambers. High silicone alloy pistons reduce reciprocating mass and offer long service life, aided by a special anti-friction coating and thin, low-friction piston rings.

The Lambda V6 also features a polymer intake manifold for noise suppression and less mass and which has a variable intake tract {short and long runner length - long = low RPM length}, boosting low rpm torque and power at high rpm. A stainless steel, silent-running timing chain also cuts noise and obviates belt replacement at the 90,000km service required of polymer belts. Hollow camshafts also reduce mass and facilitate more accurate manufacture, with performance and emission benefits. An electronic ‘fly-by-wire’ throttle aids driveability and seamlessly integrates with Grandeur’s cruise control and the ESP and TCS. Iridium-tipped spark plugs improve ignition, give long service life and help reduce emissions and fuel use. Each plug is serviced by its own coil which permits the PCU (power control module) to more precisely effect ignition. The PCU combines electronic control of both engine and automatic transmission in a single unit and is located in the engine bay rather than the cabin, thus removing a noise path.

The V6 is mated to a newly developed five-speed Selectronic transmission which works through a new gate-type shifter, removing the fiddly push button on the shift lever. A new, rpm-variable hydraulic pressure unit smooths shifting and reduces engine power loss.

Australia’s Grandeurs are built in HMC’s prestige car plant at Asan in Korea, which itself is still relatively new yet had a new engine manufacturing facility installed for Grandeur and Sonata’s two new engine series.

HMC built a $69 million pilot plant at its Namyang R&D complex in 2002 where R&D specialists work with production engineers to pinpoint any potential glitches in production.

This relentless focus on quality has seen HMC boost its quality team eightfold to 865 people in the last five years. This team has the power to halt manufacturing or assembly if at any stage it detects a problem.

What are white papers? Like blueprints? If so, then they are probably available online.

A white paper is a brief on technology, product, or service - generally multiple pages of text not necessarily with illustrations.

Wikipedia reports: "A white paper can be an authoritative report on a major issue, as by a team of experts; a government report outlining policy; or a short treatise whose purpose is to educate industry customers. In modern British terminology, a White Paper is a statement of government policy. It is called white paper because originally these were thin documents with a white self-cover, not bound in blue as most government reports were."

Let me point to one here: http://www.sun.com/products/soa/composite_app_tco.pdf .

And you are correct. Most of the time the are available online - but not for Hyundai's technology - they seem to be a bit secretive. ; -)
