    Transmission Fluid

Does anyone change (or refresh) their own transmission fluid?

Is there an easy drain plug anywhere on the transmission to drain fluid, and how much will drain with removal of that plug? (If there isn't I'll just suck it out through the dipstick housing like I've done with GM products for the last 4 decades).

Is there a readily available after-market transmission fluid in auto parts stores, or do we need to get the OEM stuff from the dealer?

Will be outa town for several days, but looking forward to useful information.

    RE: Transmission Fluid

Bump. Same question re. ATF 1st change I bought into the dealer ripoff fluid. C'mon there's gotta be other appropriate juice out there for 1/3 to 1/2 the price. Any answers???

Other question also: is there a listing of Azera TSBs anywhere on the web?

    TIA

Technical Service Bulletins are available at:

    http://www.hmaservice.com/

You'll have to register (free) and then note the "Site Requirement" link where you'll need to download "Adobe SVG Viewer" (also free)...

    Thanks Gamle-ged.

Had no success in registering at http://www.hmaservice.com/ . Each attempt to read & accept the Hyundai terms just brought up another blank page, whether the 'hold down the CTRL key' instruction was followed or not. According to the comments elsewhere, apparently one has to be using a MS IE browser to get registered there.

Will try again using every malaware creator's favorite injection site, IE!

Back to ATF for the Azera: any suggestions, other than bringing a wad of cash to the parts counter, where the clerk/manager has no more knowledge about Hyundai's lube specs than some dufus at a FLAPS. In the past I've used several different types and brands of ATF, including synthetics, meeting the specs of the domestic & German vehicles I've worked on. Open to suggestions. TIA

OK... that did it, switching to IE browser, just for sign-up, got me authorized for the http://www.hmaservice.com/ website.

Looks like 157 TSBs for my 2007 Azera so far; confidence-inspiring... not so much. Will have to spend some midnight oil reading those & copying/printing the ones involved with service issues that I might take the car to the dealer to have fixed.

Thanks for the info. Still need to check further on the ATF requirements.

    RE: Transmission Fluid

Bump, again. Anyone know which of the ATFs available locally is acceptable to meet Hyundai's strict requirements? Synthetic OK? Dyno-juice only? Auxiliary inline filter a good idea?

Already bought the filter change kit from Hyundai, just to make certain it seals properly. I'll match it up to aftermarket kits, for future reference/use @ reduced prices. Kit costs at the dealer were too much, but the Genuine Hyundai factory ATF is way too bloody expensive! Gotta be some alternatives out there???

    TIA

    RE: Transmission Fluid

When it comes to whether something is acceptable to a manufacturer or not, there will always be a question unless the manufacturer comes right out and says This Is Acceptable. I can't imagine that any well-known product wouldn't be acceptable and functional and wouldn't keep a warranty in effect. Me, I just take it to the dealer for everything, as I did with my two Honda Accords, a '77 and a '90...

Called Valvoline & their very informed 'technical support' phone contact said that their (red bottle) MaxLife® DEX/MERC ATF meets and exceeds Hyundai/Kia/Mitsubishi specifications. It is a full-synthetic ATF. Haven't priced it out yet, but it's got to be less expensive than the Hyundai dealer's parts department charges for their ATF (probably not even synthetic!). IIRC he wanted $13. a quart!

    It's good to have choices.
